Overview/History | Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated on April 14th every year in various cities across the country, as the day marks the birth of the Father of Indian Constitution Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. He was born in a Mahar family to Bhimabai and Ramji Ambadvekar on April 14th in 1891. Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar was a champion of the Untouchable movement in India, he contributed greatly towards the nation as a philosopher, jurist, politician, social reformer, and anthropologist. He became the first law minister of independent India, while he served as the Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, where he contributed enormously with various policies and by giving every representative an equal opportunity to put their view forward. He served as a Chairman for a period of two and a half year from 29 August 1947 to 24 January 1950. Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar vehemently opposed the prevailing caste system within the society before independence. He advocated equality and fraternity amongst every person in the society to foster steady and inclusive development. Since 1954-55, Baba Saheb's health was deteriorating with every passing day, and on 6 December 1956, he passed away leaving behind his legacy. |
Celebration | Mass celebrations are held across the country on this day to pay homage to B. R. Ambedkar for his splendid contribution in preparing the Constitution of India.
Every year a special event is organised in his honour at the Parliament of India. At the event, prominent leaders pay homage to his statue. The celebrations include activities like dance, painting, debate, dramatics, essay writing, as well as sports. |
