Located at a distance of 10 km from the Madurai city, the Madurai airport is one of the most well maintained airports of our country. The airport has assumed considerable importance in the recent years because of more and more flow of domestic and international tourist.
Flights operate on a daily basis from Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore and Tiruchi to Madurai. The length of the runway of the airport is 5990 ft with the runway elevation of 459 ft. However, because of heavy traffic at the Madurai Airport, the Airport Authority of India has decided to hand over sixty acres of land to modernize. The AAI has decided to increase the length of the runway to 7,500 ft and install an Instrument Landing system(ILS) and Simple Approach Lightning System.
The phase-I of the modernization process has already been completed by constructing the compound wall, repairing the terminal buildings and making the lounges centrally air conditioned. The phase-II will include construction of the car parking area, new terminal buildings and many more modern infrastructures that will give the airport a new and dynamic look.
With four airlines operating on a regular basis, Madurai airport can handle about 5,180 passengers every week. The good infrastructural facilities coupled with a disciplined and organized staff, makes the Madurai airport one of the best airports of our country.
