Cyclone Komen Hits Bangladesh, Heavy Rains in West Bengal and Odisha

10:00 AM IST, 31 July, 2015 – The Cyclonic storm-Komen weakened into a deep depression over Bangladesh at 02:30 am on 31 July 2015. After making a landfall in coastal areas of Bangladesh, heavy rains triggered in Odisha and West Bengal. More rains are expected in West Bengal in regions like Howrah, Hooghly, Burdwan, North and South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore.

To monitor the flood situations, the government in Bengal has launched a emergency helpline number – 1070.

Cyclone Komen Approaches West Bengal and Odisha

3:06 PM IST, 30 July, 2015 – According to the MeT department, a deep depression over the northeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm ‘Komen’. The department has forecasted heavy to very heavy rains in Gangetic West Bengal. It also said that the wind speed is reaching 6,575 kmph and would prevail along the north Odisha coasts and West Bengal. Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into sea along the coasts of these states.

Rainfall would occur at isolated places with heavy rainfall over Gujarat region, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli , Saurashtra, Kutch, rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand,  & Diu during next 48 hours.

In Bengal, the areas where maximum rainfall is expected, include East Midnapore, North and South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Howrah, Birbhum and Burdwan.

Odisha is battling floods in five districts, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Bhadrak and Balasore.

3:15 PM IST, 30 July, 2015 – Komen currently lies near latitude 21.70 N and longitude 91.20 E, 95 km south – southwest of chittagong (41977) and 300 km east – southeast  of Kolkatta ( 42907) . The system would move north – north west wards and cross Bangladesh coast between longitude 90.5°E and 91. 0 °E by afternoon of today the 30 th July 2015 . After landfall, it would move west – northwestwards and weaken gradually.
