The religious feast of the Immaculate Conception of our Lady (Mary) is celebrated in every year in Margao and Panjim on 8th December. On that day the farmer cuts the first ears of milk-filled corn from the rice-field and presents them for God's blessing. The feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated in then Mary Immaculate Conception Church, located in Panjim.
The concept behind the Feast of the Immaculate Conception has its reference in the New Testament of the Bible. It refers to the miraculous conception of Lord Jesus by the Virgin Mary. The Immaculate Conception rendered Jesus free of Original Sin and made him Divine. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is dedicated to Virgin Mary and celebrates her purity and devotion and obedience to God and his will.
This Christian religion was introduced into the Goan culture as a direct result of the Portuguese colonization.
