Around 10,000 devotees flocked the famous Chamunda Temple, located inside Mehrangarh Fort atop hillock, to mark the commencement of Navratra Festival on Tuesday, September 30, 2008. Around 5:30 am some people tried to enter the temple premises in a hurry which resulted in the collapse of the wall leading to the temple and triggered the stampede. Many a people got buried under the wall while a large number of worshipers lost their lives due to the aftermath.
Of the dead, 30 bodies have been taken to the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital while other 10 were sent to Mathura Das Hospital. The rescue operation is still on and casualties are feared to go up.
This is the second major stampede in India in the last three months. About 140 people lost their lives in the stampede at Naina Devi Temple in Himachal Pradesh, in August this year.
