Whats in a name?

Whats in a name? You may wonder, but going by the naming (or rather renaming) spree in India, it seems there is so much to a name. 2006 saw a slew of Indian cities and states being renamed. To begin with, on February 27, the Assam Cabinet took a decision that Assam would henceforth be known as Asom, as Assam was an Anglicized version of the name Asom. October 13th saw the Uttaranchal Assembly approving a bill to change of name of the state to Uttarakhand. On November 1, India's very own Silicon Valley, Bangalore was renamed Bengaluru, which historically means "a town of boiled beans".

On December 17, 2006, the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC) in Madhya Pradesh moved a resolution to drop the name Jabalpur, derived from the Arabic word jabal (hill) to Jabalipuram, after the sage Jabali who is believed to have lived in the area during the Ramayana era.and the list does not stop here. Plans are afoot to rename Bhopal as Bhojpal, Indore as Indur and Ujjain as Ujjaini. Prior to this, Bombay had been renamed Mumbai and Madras became Chennai, Calcutta was renamed Kolkata, Poona became Pune and Trivandrum was renamed Thiruvananthapuram. Karnataka seems to leading the pack as far as renaming is concerned. Alongwith Bengaluru, the Karnataka government has decided to change the names of some other cities in the state. So now we have Mysooru (Mysore), Mangalooru (Mangalore), Chikmagalooru (Chikmagalur), Shivamogga (Shimoga), Belagaavi (Belgaum), Kalburgi (Gulbarga), Hubballi (Hubli), Hosapete (Hospet) and Tumakooru (Tumkur). Then there is talk of renaming Ahmedabad as Karnavati

But if you thought this renaming process is only limited to cities in India, you are sadly mistaken. Even countries like Myanmar(Burma) and Cte d'Ivoire(Ivory Coast) have changed their names. It seems this process is going to continue for sometime till the powers-that-be run out of cities to be renamed. Opinions are varied on this issue. But as they say, you can call a rose by any name; it would still smell as sweet.
