The Southern Electricity Supply Company of Orissa Ltd ( SOUTHCO) supplies electricity to approximately 0.40 million consumers. There area of coverage spans around 47,000 sq kilometers. The amount of energy input is around 1,600 Mus.

The initiation of the Southern Electricity Supply Company of Orissa Ltd ( SOUTHCO) in Behrampur came about as a result of the Orissa Government's undertaking of the task of privatization of its electricity distribution systems. The task of electricity distribution was the prerogative of the Grid Corporation of Orissa Limited. It carried on the task after the Orissa State Electricity Board. The whole distributive process in the state was executed through four companies

  • The North Eastern Electricity Supply Company of Orissa Limited (NESCO)
  • The Central Electricity Supply Company of Orissa Limited (CESCO)
  • The Western Electricity Supply Company of Orissa Limited (WESCO)
  • The Southern Electricity Supply Company of Orissa Limited (SOUTHCO)

    Southern Electricity Supply Company of Orissa Ltd ( SOUTHCO)- Collaboration with REL

    The collaboration with Reliance Energy Limited came about when Gridco began the process inviting bids from national as well as international companies for choosing investors in the private sectors. These investors would in acquire equity shares in the four companies in due course. The bid of the Reliance group was accepted and it acquired the right to make investments in three of the total four companies. These were SOUTHCO, NESCO and the WESCO.
