Weather

Weather is an atmospheric state at a given time and place in relation to variables such as temperature, visibility, moisture, cloudiness, precipitation, humidity, wind velocity and barometric pressure. From anthropological perspective, weather is a phenomenon that is felt and experienced by human beings through senses. Weather is affected by the air pressure differences between two different places. The difference between temperature and pressure occurs due to the angle of the sun at a particular spot that also varies by the latitude from the tropics.

There are several components of weather such as temperature, pressure, humidity, precipitation, cloud cover, snow, winds, flooding, thunderstorms, heat waves, excessive heat and many more.

What Differentiates Weather from Climate?

Weather is conditions of atmosphere over a short period of time. Climate is atmosphere's behaviour over a longer period of time. At some places, weather can change from minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour, day-to-day and season-to-season. However, climate is average of weather over a time period. In simple terms, climate is what is expected and weather is what is received in atmosphere.

In some months, the temperature drops to even 0° Celsius resulting in extremely cold weather conditions. While in some months, hot and humid weather conditions prevail. Precipitation and humidity also cause changes in weather.

India Meteorological Department
