Where is Chandigarh?

Chandigarh is a Union Territory of India. It is the capital of two neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana. It lies near the foothills of the Shivalik Range of the Himalayas in northwestern India. Punjab surrounds Chandigarh to the north, the west, and the south, and Haryana bounds it to the east. The formation of Chandigarh as a Union Territory took place on November 1, 1966.

Chandigarh spreads across a total area of 114 sq. km (44 sq. mi). It ranks 34th in terms of the total area in India. The population of Union Territory was 1,055,450 (as per the 2011 census) Its density was 9,262/sq. km (23,988/sq. mi) (according to the 2011 census). However, the population of Chandigarh’s Metropolitan Area recorded 1,025,682 (as per the 2011 census).

The Union Territory has two seasonal streams, such as- Sukhna Lake to the east and Patiala-Ki-Rao. Sukhna Lake is a reservoir at the foothills (Shivalik hills) of the Himalayas, while Patiala-Ki-Rao is a seasonal stream. It originates in Shivalik Hills.

Chandigarh has shown a vast improvement in terms of forest-covered area in the last two years. The forest area in the UT has increased by 2% from 21.56 in 217 to 22.03 sq. km in 2019. As per the data released by India State Forest Report (ISFR), the recorded forest area of Chandigarh was 22.03 sq. km in 2019. The proportion of forests in the city was 1.36 sq. km under very dense forest, 14.24 sq. km moderately dense forest while 6.43 sq. km under open forest.

The Union Territory has several gorgeous parks, and the Zakir Hussain Rose Garden is considered Asia’s biggest rose garden. It contains varieties of roses and medicinal plants and trees. Apart from this, Garden of Fragrance, Garden of Palms, Butterfly Park, and Japanese Garden have made the Union Territory a green belt.

A wide variety of mammals are found at Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary like Sambar, Spotted Deer (Chittal), Pangolin (anteater), Wild boar, etc. Several birds are also spotted here, including- Peacock, Red jungle fowl, Grey partridge, Cuckoos, and Nightjars.

The city experiences a humid subtropical climate. It has hot summers and mild winters. The temperature remains variable in Chandigarh.

Summers are long in the city, characterized by occasional mild showers and thunderstorms.

The average summer temperature in the state remains in the range of 77°F (25°C) to 98.6°F (37°C ). Sometimes the mercury touches up to 111.2°F (44°C) in summer.

The winter season in Chandigarh knocks the door in mid-November and ends in mid-March. The temperature during this period in the Union Territory remains between 38.48°F (3.6°C ) to 73.4°F (23°C ).

It receives an average annual rainfall of around 979 mm (38.5-inch per year). January and June are the coldest and hottest months, respectively, in the Union Territory.
