Where is Tripura?

Tripura lies in the northeastern part of India. Bangladesh surrounds it to the north, west, and south. It also shares its borders with Mizoram to the east and Assam to the northeast. The formation of Tripura as a state took place on January 21, 1972.

What is the Geography of Tripura?

Tripura spreads across a total area of 10,491.65 sq. km (4,050.85 sq. mi). It ranks 27th in (2014) in terms of total area amongst the states and union territories in India. Its population recorded 3,671,032 (as per the 2011 census). The population density of the state was 350/sq. km (910/sq. mi) (as per the 2011 census).

Tripura is replete with rivers; all of them are rain-fed. So most of them are temporary. Major rivers of the state originate from hill ranges. Prominent rivers of Tripura are- Bijay, Deo, Dhalai, Feni, Gumti, Haora, and Juri.

Tripura is a small hilly state and divided into five ranges, such as Jampui Range, Shakan Range, Langtarai Range, Atharamura Range, Deotamura, and Baramura Range. Jampui Range is the highest peak of the state.

Forests cover a large part of the state. As per the data received through satellite, the recorded forest area of Tripura was 7,725.59 sq km, which is 73.68 % % of the state’s geographical area in 2017. The proportion of forests in the state was 653.51 sq. km under very dense forest, 5,236.19 sq km moderately dense forest while 1,835.89 sq. km under open forest.

The tiny state Tripura has an abundant amount of flora and fauna. The state has four major wildlife sanctuaries like Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary, Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary, Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, and Trishna Wildlife.

Plenty of tree species have been found in the sanctuaries. Some of them have medicinal values as well, like Kurcha, Tulsi, Vasak, Sarpaganda, Rudraksha, Bel, Chirata, Kalamegh, etc.

It is home to several species of mammals, including Indian Bison, Hoolock Gibbon, Lalmukh Bandar, Capped Langur, Wild boar, Leopard, and many more. Several kinds of migratory birds are also spotted in Tripura during the winter season, such as Large Wader, Northern Shoveler, Greater Flamingo, Black-Tailed Godwit, and many more.

The state tree of Tripura is Aquilaria malaccensis, while Mesua ferrea is the state’s flower. Besides this, the state has declared Phayre’s leaf monkey as the official state animal, and Green imperial pigeon is the state bird of Tripura.

What is the Climate of Tripura?

Tripura experiences a warm and humid tropical climate. Humidity remains high throughout the year.

The average summer temperature in Tripura remains in the range of 30.70°C (87.26 °F) and 19.50°C (67.1°F). The temperature in the state begins declining during the mid-November. The winter temperature in the state remains between 25°C (77°F) to 10°C (50°F).

The state experiences an annual rainfall ranging from 1922 mm to 2855 mm. The rainfall by and large increases from southwest to northeast. January and June are the coldest and hottest months, respectively, in the state.

What is the Economy of Tripura?

Tripura’s economy mainly depends on agriculture, horticulture, and natural gas.

Agriculture plays a vital role in the economy of Tripura. Around 75% of the workforce of the state depends on agriculture for their livelihood. Paddy is the major crop that is reaped in the state, cultivated in 91 percent of the cropped area.

It is known for its immense power generation as well. As of March 2020, the state had a total installed power generation capacity of 763.96 megawatts (MW), which is distributed as- 185.51 MW is under state utilities, 574.04 MW is under central & 4.41 MW is under the private sector.

The agro-climatic conditions in Tripura are perfect for growing various fruits such as– pineapples, oranges, bananas, lemons, etc. The total fruit production in Tripura touched 555.473 thousand metric tonnes (MT). In contrast, total vegetable production jumped to 813.378 thousand MT, plantation production reached 29.458 thousand MT, and in the end, spices production in the state remained 30.22 thousand MT in 2018-19.

Critical Industries of the state are natural gas, food processing, rubber, tea, bamboo, handloom and handicrafts, sericulture, and tourism.

The Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of Tripura was Rs 0.461 lakh crore (US$6.5 billion) in 2017-18.

What is the Transportation System of Tripura?

The government-owned Tripura Road Transport Corporation has been providing satisfactory bus service in the state.

National highways are the lifelines of the state. Prominent national highways that pass through the state are NH-108, NH-108A, NH-208, NH-208A, etc.

Railway network has been developing in the state. Agartala is well-connected with essential junctions such as Guwahati, Sealdah, and Anand Vihar at New Delhi.

Tripura is connected by the airline network as well. It has one domestic airport; its name is Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport, famous as Agartala Airport.
