Amravati literally means Abode of the immortals. Amravati was initially the capital of Berar a city in Madhya Pradesh. Amravati was transferred from Madhya Pradesh to Bombay State in 1956. Later in 1960, Amravati became one of the districts of Maharashtra.
The much awaited pan Asian sports event is finally knocking. The XVI Asian Games, also known as the XVI Asiad, are scheduled to be held in Guangzhou, China from November 12 to November 27, 2010. Home to some of the finest sports arenas, natural treasures, museums and wild life sanctuaries, Guangzhou is the second city in China to host the Asian Games after Beijing in 1990. The grand sports carnival starts at 20:04 IST, with the theme song 'Sunshine Again' presented by the South Korean singer Kim Hyun Joong.
The opening ceremony of the XVI Asian Games marks the beginning of a 15 day enthralling sports extravaganza. Scheduled to take place at the New Citizens Plaza located in Haixinsha Island along the Pearl River in Guangzhou the opening ceremony of the of the 2010 Asian Games promises to be a one of a kind event held in the history of Asian Games so far.
To participate in the 476 events in 42 sports thousands of professional athletes have made it from 45 different Asian countries. A total of 53 competition venues and 17 training grounds are all set to host the 15 day mega sports event in Guangzhou.
After the performance of the theme song there are a series of events that are sure to send the crowds in raptures and jubilation. The event will kick off with a Flag March of the participating nations in boats, for the first time. Known as Setting Sail this event is a boat parade with 45 boats accommodating the competitors of 45 countries. This event lead by the games mascot sets the ball rolling. Apart from boat parade there will be numerous other events and performances among which the Lingnan cultural traditional dances will acquire a special position.
