Overview/History | Mahavirgi Fair is held in the Chandan Gaon situated 176 km from the state of Jaipur. The Mahavirgi festival is held in the honour of 24th Jain Tirthankar Mahavir each year in the month of March or April. |
Celebration | The fair is held at the Mahavirji temple where the idol of Mahavir is kept in an enclosure called 'Katala'. Popular belief has it that the image of Mahavirji was dug out of a hillock named as the 'Devta Ka Tila' by a labour worker. The temple also houses images of other Jain Tirthankaras. A tower called 'tower of glory' is also located in front of the temple. The major crowd puller to the fair is the 'Rath Yatra'. All the followers of Mahavir take the idol of the deity to the nearby 'River Gambhiri' in a procession. The idol is taken in a golden chariot and 'Kailash Abhishek' is performed once the procession reaches the destination. Meanwhile, the followers sing hymns in praise of the lord. The fair has shops, rides, food stalls which add to the entertainment. Besides, plays on the life history of Mahavirgi are sometimes performed by students. |
