Many fissures were formed in peninsular India during the Carboniferous period. Basin-like troughs were formed due to the submergence of the land through these cracks. In these pits, coal was formed due to vegetation suppression and the action of heat and pressure on it. Presently coal is present in the river basins of India like Damodar, Son, Mahanadi, Godavari and Wardha etc.

Bituminous coal is found in India and is considered second-grade coal. The first-grade coal is called anthracite. Most of the coal of India is found only in the rocks of the Gondwana order.

The latest discovery of Gondwana rocks in 2022:

Geologists have discovered 299 million-year-old rocks in the Indus river of Shyok and Nubra valleys in Ladakh. The rock belongs to the Gondwana period. Fossils of seeds and leaves from the time of the Gondwana system has also been found near this rock.
