22 people missing in bridge collapse on Mumbai-Goa highway

A bridge dating back to the British-era and located across the Savitri River on the Mumbai-Goa highway has collapsed. At least 22 people are reported to be missing in the mishap which took place on Tuesday at 11.30 pm. Several vehicles, including two Mumbai-bound buses, have fallen into the river. The bridge was approximately at a distance of 5 km from Mahad, a town in Raigad district of Maharashtra. It is about 170 km south of Mumbai.

Media reports quoted officials as saying that three NDRF teams, which comprise 80 personnel including drivers, are currently engaged in the rescue operations. But heavy rain is affecting rescue operations. Meanwhile, police and other officials have already reached the spot and traffic has been diverted to a new bridge located nearby. The Coast Guard has also pressed into service a helicopter to search for possible survivors. So far, rescuers have not found any survivors or vehicles. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who talked with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, offered full support. Heavy monsoonal rains in the area have witnessed a surge in the water level of Savitri River.

The government has set up a helpline which could help people to acquire information. The helpline numbers isĀ (02141) 222118.
