After dividing Krishna and Nellore districts, Guntur District was created on October 1st, 1904, with its administrative centre at Guntur. There existed a "Guntur District" with its headquarters at Guntur before 1859, but it had a distinct jurisdiction. The district was disbanded in 1859 and partitioned between Rajahmundry and Machilipatnam, which were renamed Krishna and Godavari. The lands of the Taluka of Bapatla, Sattenapalli, Tenali, Guntur, Narasaraopet, and Palnadu from the ancient Krishna district as well as Ongole Taluk from Nellore district were combined to form the district of Guntur in 1904.
