The term "Nandi Alayam'' is where the name Nandyal originates. This location is about the centre of nine Nandi shrines, and because of its proximity to so many Nandi temples, it has long been a popular pilgrimage destination. The Nandyal District is located between 150 27' 49' north latitude and 780 28' 43' east longitude. The district is located between 100 and 200 feet above the average sea level. This district is bordered on the north by the Krishna Rivers and the Telangana State district of Mahabubnagar, on the south by the districts of Kadapa and Anantapur, on the west by the district of Kurnool, and the east by the district of Prakasam.
