NTR District was proposed on January 26, 2022, and when the government of Andhra Pradesh published the gazette notification on April 3, 2022, it became one of the twenty-six districts in the state and was given the name of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. T. Rama Rao. On April 4, 2022, the gazette notification went into effect. The district, which was created by carving apart the Krishna district, comprises the current Vijayawada revenue division as well as the newly created Nandigama,Tiruvuru revenue divisions.
