This announcement was made in a press conference held on August 16, 2024. The ECI provided details about when the voting will take place and all the essential dates and timelines for the elections.

Haryana will have its elections in just one phase, which means that all the voting will happen on a single day. On the other hand, the elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted in three separate phases. In Jammu and Kashmir, the political situation has been changing quickly since Article 370 was abrogated in 2019.

Election Schedule Overview

The Election Commission of India has set the following dates for the assembly elections:

Haryana

Voting will take place on October 5, 2024, with the results to be declared on October 8, 2024.

Jammu and Kashmir

The elections will be in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Voting on September 18, 2024
  • Phase 2: Voting on September 25, 2024
  • Phase 3: Voting on October 2, 2024

The election results for Jammu and Kashmir will also be announced on October 8, 2024. This schedule was chosen because of the challenges faced in conducting elections in the region. The situation in Jammu and Kashmir requires a careful and well planned approach to ensure a smooth and fair election process.

Importance Of The Elections

  • Political Stability: Haryana, Jammu, and Kashmir have faced many political challenges recently. These elections are important for them to form a stable government that can effectively look after the local issues and ensure smooth governance.
  • Election Readiness: The Election Commission of India (ECI) is putting significant effort into ensuring that the elections are well-organised and fair. This includes updating voter lists and ensuring all necessary arrangements are in place for a smooth election process.
  • Voter Participation: With the elections coming, there is a strong focus on increasing voter involvement, particularly among young people. The ECI is working to increase voter participation to ensure the election results are accurate and show the will of the citizens.

Voter Registration and Awareness Efforts

As the elections approach, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is working hard to ensure that citizens are informed and ready to vote. They have launched several initiatives focusing on getting people registered to vote and educating them about the importance of their vote.

  • Online Voter Registration: The ECI has made it easier for people to register to vote online through their official website. This is especially helpful for young people and those who find it difficult to register in person. The goal is to make it simple and convenient for everyone to participate in the elections.
  • Educational Programs: The ECI also runs various programs in schools, colleges, and communities to spread awareness about voting. These programs help explain the voting process, clear up any confusion, and show why it’s important for every eligible citizen to vote. The aim is to empower people with the knowledge they need to participate in the elections confidently.

History of Election in Jammu and Kashmir

The last assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2014. At that time, a coalition government was formed with Jammu and Kashmir, which

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led it. However, on August 5, 2019, the Indian government made a big change by repealing Article 370, giving Jammu and Kashmir special status. This led to the creation of two new Union Territories, Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, starting on October 31, 2019.

Jammu and Kashmir lost their status as states, and their legislative assemblies were dissolved because of the change. The upcoming elections in the Jammu and Kashmir will be important for setting up democratic processes and deciding how the region will be governed.
