Hostel life, especially for college students, is the most memorable time. It is a time for fun and frolic with friends, and of course, a time to learn to be independent. The only hitch is that the food in most of the hostels is not very palatable. Eating out every day is not only harmful to health but also pinches the pocket of the parents. But there is a healthy option available. You could cook your own food every once in a while. No, it is not going to be difficult, for the recipe of the dishes we are sharing is not only easy to make, but they are also filling and healthy. The recipes also cater for the fact that you may be having only a hot-plate in your room.
Before we proceed with the recipes, here is a checklist of ingredients you must always keep yourself stocked up with.
- Vegetables – Onion, Cucumber, Green Chilli, Tomatoes, Potatoes.
- Spices – Salt, pepper, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, and Garam Masala Powder.
- Bread, Butter, Oil, Tomato Sauce, Jam and Cheese.
Ingredients (For 2 Sandwiches)
Eggs – 3
Onion – ½ finely chopped
Tomato – ½ finely chopped
Pepper – A pinch
Salt – To taste
Oil- 1 Tsp
Bread – 4 slices
Butter – 1 Tbsp
Method
Take oil in a pan. Once hot, add the chopped onion and sauté till translucent. Then add the tomatoes. Once it is mushy, add beaten eggs, salt to taste and pepper. Mix well and stir till dry. Apply the butter on the outside of the bread slices. Stuff the scrambled eggs between the two slices. Now toast both the buttered sides on the frying pan, pressing it down till they are golden and crisp. Delicious sandwiches thus ready.
*You can skip the onion and tomatoes and make it with just eggs, salt, and pepper.
Cheese Sandwich
Ingredients (For 2 Sandwiches)
Cheese – 2 Tbsp grated
Onion – ½ sliced into long pieces
Capsicum – ½ sliced into long pieces
Pepper – A pinch
Salt – To taste
Bread – 4 slices
Butter – 1 Tbsp
Method
Mix the grated cheese with the onion and capsicum along with pepper and salt to taste. Mix well. Apply the butter on the outside of the bread slices. Stuff the Cheese between the two slices. Now toast both the buttered sides on the frying pan, pressing it down till they are golden and crisp. Delicious Sandwiches thus ready.
Paneer Wraps
Ingredients (For 2 Rolls)
Paneer – 50 gm
Onion – ½ diced into chunks
Tomato – ½ diced into chunks
Capsicum – ½ diced into chunks
Pepper – A pinch
Tomato Sauce – 1 Tsp
Salt – To taste
Oil- 1 Tsp
Ready Made Wraps – 2. These are flatbreads made of wheat and easily available in any supermarket. Just ask for Wraps.
Method
Take oil in a pan. Once hot, add the chopped onion and sauté till translucent. Then add the tomatoes and the capsicum and sauté just for a minute. Finally, add the diced paneer along with salt to taste and pepper. Mix well and remove from heat. Heat the wraps lightly in the frying pan. Now add the paneer stuffing, a dash of tomato sauce and roll it up. Delicious Paneer Kathi Rolls ready.
Potato Rice
Ingredients (Serves One)
Potato – 1 big chopped fine with the skin
Onion - ½ finely chopped
Green Chilli – 1 finely chopped. You can skip this if you do not like spicy food.
Red Chilli Powder – To taste
Salt to taste
Oil – 2 Tsp.
Cumin Seeds – ½ Tsp
Turmeric Powder – ½ Tsp
Method
Wash the potatoes and drain the water completely. Take oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds. Then add the onion and green chilli with Turmeric Powder and sauté till golden. Now add the potato along with salt to taste. There should be no water in the potato. Now cook on simmer, very low heat till done. Finally, add red chilli powder and mix cooked rice in it. Delicious Potato rice is ready. Have it with curd.
*If you find it difficult to cook rice, you can always get a bowl of cooked rice from the Hostel Mess.
Tomato Rice
Ingredients (Serves One)
Tomatoes – 2 big chopped fine.
Onion - ½ finely chopped
Cumin Seeds – ½ Tsp
Turmeric Powder – ½ Tsp
Red Chilli Powder – To taste
Garam Masala – ½ Tsp
Salt to taste
Oil – 2 Tsp.
Method
Take oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds. Then add the onion with turmeric powder and sauté till golden. Now add the tomato along with salt to taste. Now cook on simmer, very low heat, till the tomatoes are nice and mushy. Finally add red chilli powder, garam masala powder, and mix cooked rice in it. Delicious Tomato rice is ready. Have it with curd.
