Why the Fare Hike Was Necessary
Delhi Metro has been a stable yet cheap way of transporting many people. Nonetheless, to maintain such a vast network, heavy investments are made in infrastructure and electricity, not excluding the question of wages to the workforce. The expenses of running the metro have been on the rise in the past eight years. The DMRC quoted the necessity to sustain service quality, renovate trains, and be safe as the reason to introduce the revision. Although the increase in fare is nominal in most of the distances, it is reflective of the increase in the requirement for a balance between the operational costs and the affordable commuter cost.New Fare Structure
The fare revision has initiated a marginal rise in all the major distance slabs. This is a breakdown of the new ticket prices:- 0–2 km: ₹11 (previously ₹10)
- 2–5 km: ₹21 (previously ₹20)
- 5–12 km: ₹32 (previously ₹30)
- 12–21 km: ₹43 (previously ₹40)
- 21–32 km: ₹54 (previously ₹50)
- Above 32 km: ₹64 (previously ₹60)
Impact on Daily Commuters
To the vast majority of the daytime passengers, this does not involve much change, merely a few rupees a journey. But the hike will be more perceptible in those travelling long distances. The increase in fare impacts:- Office commuters: Slight increase in the daily living costs, travelling to and from work.
- Students: Frequent metro commuters will have to change their budgets towards travelling costs.
- Casual travelers: Holiday weekend visits, short journeys will be at a slight markup.
Special Fare Slabs for Sundays and Holidays
As a way of alleviating the pressure on the casual and families, the DMRC has provided subsidized Sunday and national holiday fares. The most important details are as follows:- Shorter and mid-range distances of up to 2 km are fixed at 11 rupees.
- The longer travel higher than 32 km is charged at a maximum of 64 rupees.
