Movie Review 102 Not Out: A refreshing concept but knocks out with monotony

Movie Plot

Based on a Gujarati play, Amitabh Bachchan portrays the role of 102-year-old man, Dattatray Vakharia, who wants to live for sixteen more years so that he breaks the world record of “Oldest Man alive”. He has a zest to live, unlike his 75year old son, Babulal (Rishi Kapoor), who has a complex lifestyle and is stuck in his dull routines. He even showers only for 14 minutes, because he fears he’ll catch a cold. The story begins when Dattatray gets fed up with his son’s grumpy nature and announces that he will send his son to an old age home if he doesn’t mend his ways. In short, the movie tries to teach a lesson that one should never feel old and “Live it up” till their last breath.

Age is just a number, right? Big B entraps his audience and makes them understand the same by his powerful monologues, but the ever-so-brilliant actors are unable to bring out their best because of the dull script. Nowhere during the 101 minutes, your jaws are going to drop. There is no twist in the movie, either. The sobbing Rishi Kapoor might depress you even more. Jimit Trivedi’s Dhiru aids in bringing light comedy but his interventions do not succeed in making the movie too enjoyable. The humour from the movie fades away a bit quickly and the basic plot sets on an emotional background.

Our Verdict

Those who grew up watching the two brilliant veterans will surely become nostalgic and enjoy the screenplay, especially, if they love Amitabh Bachchan’s monologues and energetic act as always. Since the movie relies too heavily on prosthetics, it might disappoint those who come with high expectations.
