UP Election 2017: Akhilesh Prevails Over Mulayam in SP Infighting

A lot of election experts may have been thinking that following its family feud the election symbol of cycle, used traditionally by the Samajwadi Party, may be frozen and that the two new factions of the party may have to contest the upcoming assembly elections with new symbols. However, in what can be termed as a major development, the Election Commission (EC) has decided that the faction headed by Akhilesh Yadav is the actual Samajwadi Party and therefore should contest with the said symbol. This has brought much joy to the ones who were supporting the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. His supporters are supposed to have attempted to gain control of the party office as well.

Effects of the decision

As may be expected, the camp headed by Mulayam and Shivpal is decidedly forlorn having heard such a verdict. The decision has also led to a significant amount of upheaval as far as politics in Uttar Pradesh is concerned. This has signalled the end of the clout enjoyed by Mulayam on the party and also upset the calculations of other parties in the fray for the upcoming state elections. They may have been thinking that the family feud will help them get better results since their clout will be considerably lesser with a new symbol. That may have made them complacent. However, the new ruling will now force them to evaluate their plans again.

What had Mulayam been saying?

Mulayam Singh Yadav had recently been telling his supporters that Akhilesh was not really a well-wisher of Muslims as he may have been projecting himself. He had also said that he would be taking part in the elections against his son. The announcement came at a time when the BJP was just announcing its first contestants' list.

What can Mulayam do now?

Now, Mulayam has two options. He can look for another symbol or choose the symbol of Lok Dal. Incidentally, the President of Lok Dal had offered the same for Akhilesh. Akhilesh has meanwhile decided to go on a whirlwind tour of UP from January 19. It is also expected that Congress would announce its alliance with some other parts in a couple of days now. This decision from the EC has helped the political legacy of Mulayam to be handed over to Akhilesh, the eldest son.
