Based on the critical condition where the emergent ray just grazes the adjacent face of the prism, we find that the refractive index of the surrounding medium ( $n_{m}$ ) is equal to the refractive index of the prism ( $n_{p}$ ).

Hence, $n_{m} = n_{p}$ .
