Ferromagnetic materials are substances that display strong and enduring magnetization when exposed to an external magnetic field. Common examples of ferromagnetic materials include iron, nickel, cobalt, and various alloys.

The phenomenon of ferromagnetism originates from the alignment of atomic magnetic moments (spins) within the material. At room temperature, these materials possess unpaired electrons in their outer electron shells, which naturally align themselves in the same direction when influenced by an external magnetic field. This alignment leads to the establishment of a significant net magnetic moment within the material.

The concept of magnetic domains is pivotal in understanding ferromagnetism. Magnetic domains are distinct regions within a ferromagnetic substance where the magnetic moments of atoms are uniformly aligned in the same direction. In the absence of an external magnetic field, ferromagnetic materials typically exhibit multiple magnetic domains, each with its own randomly oriented magnetic moment.

When an external magnetic field is applied to a ferromagnetic material, the magnetic domains begin to reorient themselves in alignment with the external field. With increasing strength of the external magnetic field, more domains align in the direction of the field, causing the material to become magnetized.

Crucially, even after the removal of the external magnetic field, the magnetic domains tend to preserve their alignment to some extent. This characteristic enables ferromagnetic materials to retain a degree of magnetization even without the presence of an external field.
