With the help of a diagram, briefly explain the construction and working of ac generator.

Ans. Construction:

  • Stator: Stationary part made of iron or steel laminations with armature windings.

  • Rotor: Rotating part mounted on a shaft, containing electromagnets or field windings.

  • Slip Rings and Brushes: Connected to the rotor shaft for electrical contact.

Working:

  1. Mechanical Energy Input: Provided by a prime mover like a turbine or engine, rotates the rotor.

  2. Electromagnetic Induction: Rotating rotor induces a magnetic field, causing AC in stator’s armature windings.

  3. Output Voltage: AC voltage generated in stator’s windings, conducted to the load through slip rings and brushes.

  4. Regulation: Output voltage regulated by adjusting rotor’s excitation current or mechanical input.

In summary, AC generators convert mechanical energy to electrical energy via electromagnetic induction. The rotor induces a magnetic field in the stator, producing AC voltage in its windings for external use.
