Kalpana Chawla, an Indian-American astronaut, was one of the seven crew members who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster on 1 February 2003. Chawla was born on 17 March 1962 in Karnal, Haryana. Her parents Banarsi Lal and Sanyogita were Partition refugees from Pakistan.
