French Nouvelle-Calédonie, also known as New Caledonia, is a distinctive collectivity located 900 miles east of Australia in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It includes the Loyalty Islands, the Bélep Islands, the Île des Pins, and the island of New Caledonia. There are three provinces in New Caledonia, which have a total land area of 18,576 km2. While the Loyalty Islands Province consists of a group of three islands off the east coast of the mainland, the North and South Provinces are located on the New Caledonian mainland.

The city of Nouméa also spelled Numea, is the capital of the French overseas territory of New Caledonia. It is located in the southwest corner of the main island of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean. About 10% of the nickel supply known to exist in the world is found in New Caledonia, making it a significant nickel source. 7,100,000 tonnes of nickel are found on the islands. In addition, fishing, forestry, and agriculture are significant. Due to the small local market, industries that produce import-substituting goods, like beer and soft drinks, have had little effect on the economy.

History:

James Cook, a British navigator, and explorer arrived in 1774 and gave the island the name New Caledonia. The southern third of the continental United States was under French rule by 1860. Large portions of Melanesian land had been alienated and the inhabitants had been relegated to reserves by the end of the 19th century. On December 12, 2021, New Caledonia, a French colony in the South Pacific, held an independence referendum. After elections in 2018 and 2020, in which independence was defeated by 56.7% and 53.3% respectively, the third and final vote was held under the Nouméa Accord.

Culture:

Nouméa's bars, restaurants, and cinemas, as well as the Bernheim Library, are clear examples of the influence of European culture. Melanesian traditions are still prevalent in many places, especially in terms of obligations and ties to families and clans. No matter their level of education or urbanization, Melanesians almost universally visit their villages to participate in elaborate rituals and gift-giving on special occasions like births, marriages, and deaths.

Language:

Under constitutional law, French is the official language of New Caledonia. During colonization, native speakers used their native tongue for communication, and Bislama, an Anglo-Melanesian language with a lexical foundation that is primarily English, when necessary.

Geography:

The geographic characteristics of New Caledonia, a French overseas territory in the Melanesia subregion, set the continental island group apart from others in the southwest Pacific. One of the most northern regions of Zealandia, a nearly entirely submerged continent that split from Australia and Antarctica between 85 and 130 million years ago, is New Caledonia.
