The South Pacific Ocean contains the island nation of Niue. About 261 square kilometers of land make up Niue. The name "The Rock," which derives from the traditional name "Rock of Polynesia," is a common nickname for the island.

Alofi, which has a land area of 100 square miles, is the largest town and the capital. Niue is a small island developing state that experiences several interconnected development challenges that are typical of other small Pacific Island nations. The Cook Islands, Tonga, and Samoa form a triangle with Niue, one of the world's largest upraised coral atolls, in the middle of the South Pacific.

History:

There is archeological proof that Samoans first settled Niue around 900 CE. It was cut off from New Zealand in 1903 and given its own island council and resident commissioner. Following a referendum in 1974 in which Niueans had three options: independence, self-government, or continuation as a New Zealand territory, the New Zealand Parliament reinstated self-government in Niue with the 1974 constitution. Since the majority chose self-rule, Niue's written constitution became the country's supreme law. President Joe Biden declared that the United States would recognize Niue as a sovereign nation on September 29, 2022.

Culture:

At significant occasions like weddings and official ceremonies, traditional dances and songs are performed. In Alofi, there is a small museum and a resurgence of several traditional crafts, including the hand-building of canoes and the production of the mulberry bark cloth known as hiapo.

Returned immigrants who work in the arts like writing, painting, sculpture, and music composition can support themselves. However, rather than focusing on the neighborhood, these initiatives are more geared toward an international commercial art market. The majority of arts funding comes from abroad, and the New Zealand government is keen to support and preserve traditional Pacific arts and crafts.

Language:

With 30% of the population speaking both Niuean and English, Niue is a bilingual nation. Only 11% of people speak English as a first language, compared to 46% of Niuean speakers. The Polynesian language of Niuean is a member of the Malayo-Polynesian family of Austronesian languages. It is most closely related to Tongan and slightly more distantly related to Mori, Samoan, and Hawaiian Polynesian languages.

Geography:

The GPS coordinates for Niue are 19° 3' 16.0020'' S and 169° 52' 2.0388'' W. It is a place in the Islands country category. The terrain of Niue is characterized by its steep limestone cliffs along the coast and a central plateau that rises to a height of about 200 feet above sea level. The entire island is encircled by a coral reef, with the only significant breach being on the central western coast, not far from the capital, Alofi. With two expansive bays along its western coast, the island is roughly oval and has a diameter of about 11 miles.
