In order to reduce tribulations faced by the poor across India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Saubhagya Scheme for household electrification. The Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana, known as the Saubhagya Power Scheme, aims to provide electricity to all the households across India along with increasing job opportunities and providing better quality of life. The Saubhagya Yojana aims to provide electricity connections to over 4 crore families in rural and urban areas by December 2018. On 25 September 2017, the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (Saubhagya Scheme) was launched by Prime Minister Modi at the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) - National Executive Meeting held at the Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi. It is a scheme for the upliftment of the underprivileged and has been allocated a budget of Rs. 16,320 crore.
With rampant modernization, India is growing at a rapid rate. Still in the twenty first century, 50 million households don't have access to electricity out of the 250 million households in the country.
Reiterating NDA's agenda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “the welfare of the poor is linked to the identity of the NDA government”. The Saubhagya Scheme seeks to improve the environment, public health, education along with emphasis on connectivity. Most importantly electricity will be billed without any subsidy. Modi's announcement of the Saubhagya Scheme comes months ahead of the general elections in the state of Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat as well as the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattigarh, Rajasthan and Karnatka are scheduled to have elections in 2018.
Below Poverty Line (BPL) households, along with those living in rural areas, will benefit immensely from the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana. As mentioned by the Prime Minister, the Government will voluntarily approach the households across India which do not have electricity connections and will provide them basic electricity. Under this scheme, every household of rural area will get free electricity 24/7. While launching the Saubhagya Power Scheme, Prime Minister Modi said that India is progressing from “Bijli Sankat” to “Bijli Surplus”.
