Rohit Sharma Biography

The Indian cricket team has witnessed the participation of several great players over the years. Each player has contributed with all his heart and soul and helped the team achieve tremendous feats. One such player of our cricket team is Rohit Sharma, popularly known as ‘hitman’. Over the years, the 37-year-old has made his name in the game and become one of the most successful players in the history of the sport.

Early Life and Education

Rohit Sharma was born on April 30, 1987, in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He was born to his father, Gurunath Sharma, and mother, Purnima Sharma. Rohit’s family suffered certain financial issues, due to which his journey during childhood was not a cakewalk. But this did not keep him from developing a passion for the sport.

Rohit has been playing cricket since a very young age and has received enough support from those around him. He completed his schooling at Swami Vivekanand International School, Mumbai, and then enrolled in Rizvi College of Arts, Science, and Commerce to pursue his graduation.

Inclination towards Cricket

Since Rohit’s family could not support his dream financially due to constraints. In view of this, his uncle enrolled him to a cricket camp in 1999, where his talent could be nurtured. While he was undergoing training at the camp, he was noticed by coach Dinesh Lad, who happened to be a friend of Rohit’s uncle.

It was Dinesh Lad who ultimately became his first coach and guided him on this journey. Lad wanted Rohit to be very successful in this venture, so he provided him with all the help that was possible. He even convinced his school to waive the entire fee so that Rohit could have access to better training facilities.

Before he began batting, Rohit started as a spinner. Eventually, during training, he and the coaches realised his talent for batting as well, which allowed him to focus on that aspect as well.

The Hitman’s Career

Domestic Career

Rohit Sharma made his List A debut for the West Zone against the Central Zone while playing for the Deodhar Trophy in 2005. He scored 31 runs in the match and helped the West Zone win. In that very tournament, he also scored a staggering 142 off 123 balls against North Zone, which gave him the spotlight.

Then he made a debut in first class, where he represented Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in 2006. While playing in this format, he was able to score 205 runs against Gujarat in December 2009 and then also scored 309 not out in that very tournament.

Rohit displayed a consistent set of performances that also allowed him to become the captain of the Mumbai Ranji team. It was under his leadership that Mumbai made a good name in domestic cricket.

International Career

Rohit’s first match international match was the One Day International (ODI) played against Ireland, on June 23, 2007, at Civil Service Cricket Club, Belfast. He wore the Indian jersey for the first time and became a part of the Indian team.

Despite being in the team, Rohit did not get a chance to bat as he was placed at number 7. But the higher-order players took up the responsibility really well and won the match.

Further, during the inaugural T20 World Cup, Rohit made enough contributions to the team’s efforts that ultimately made India win the T20 World Cup in 2007.

He then scored his first ODI half-century in November 2007 and made good scores during the 2007-08 ODI series held in Australia. He went on to score two ODI hundreds in 2010 but unfortunately was dropped from the team due to a loss of fitness and form.

In the year 2013, under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, Rohit was allowed to open for the team. This decision was very beneficial, as Rohit, along with Shikhar Dhawan, gave India an edge during the games. In 2014, Rohit scored his first ODI double hundred against Australia and then it was another double hundred against Sri Lanka in the same year.

Rohit made his test debut in 2013 against West Indies, at Eden Gardens Kolkata. Notably, this series was also the last one for Sachin Tendulkar. In 2015, he became the second Indian to score a hundred in all three international formats when he scored a hundred during the T20I match against South Africa at Dharmshala.

During the 2019 ODI World Cup, India made it to the semifinals. During this World Cup, Rohit displayed immense talent as he scored five centuries and became one of the top scorers of that time. In February 2022, he was appointed as the captain of the Indian team across all three formats.

In the 2023 ODI World Cup, India fared really well under his captaincy until the final match, in which they lost against Australia. In 2024, Rohit Sharma led the Indian team to win its second T20I World Cup by scoring three half-centuries in the tournament.

Lastly, he announced his retirement from the T20I format after India won in the final match against South Africa.

IPL Career

Rohit Sharma began his journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 with the team Deccan Chargers. His contribution allowed the team to remain in a significant position for the time that he was a part of the team.

He then became a part of the Mumbai Indians, who signed him in 2011. He became the captain of the team in 2013 and led them to victory in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. He was the captain of the team until December 2023, when Hardik Pandya took charge.

Personal Life

Rohit Sharma got married to Ritika Sajdeh on December 13, 2015. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Samaira, on December 30, 2018. He has been known to balance his career and personal life while also contributing to some charity initiatives.

Recently, the couple welcomed their second child in November 2024, who was named Ahaan. The hitman also posted on social media to celebrate this joyous occasion.
